"The Community Connect program has been instrumental in providing broadband access to residents in remote areas and low-income communities. This year, the Karuk Tribe in Orleans, Calif., will receive a Community Connect grant to provide Internet services to 570 tribal members in a mountainous region of Northern California."

USDA Rural Development announced that the Karuk Tribe has won a Community Connect grant for Orleans, Humboldt County, California.

Here's Access Humboldt's statement for the press:

“Karuk Tribe’s new broadband project will bring needed service to Orleans for public safety, education, health services, cultural preservation and civic engagement. Access Humboldt supports such ongoing efforts to advance community based broadband networks and local media access across Humboldt County. In Orleans, we're supporting sustainable broadband adoption and community media access as part of our Generation ZeroDivide project,” said Sean McLaughlin, executive director of Access Humboldt.

McLaughlin added, "hopefully, KHAA Orleans Community Radio, the Karuk Tribe's radio station can also benefit from this network deployment and community-based broadband adoption efforts will support local voices for Tribes and other remote communities as well."

Generation ZeroDivide is a digital literacy and youth media project funded by ARRA's "Sustainable Broadband Adoption" program with seven organizations in six states, including Access Humboldt as the only recipient of ARRA broadband stimulus funds for the North Coast region of California.
