Local Channels Help to Inform Voters

Eureka, CA - Access Humboldt’s community media channels provide a free platform for political speech in the community.

While the broadcast TV rules for “equal time” and the “Fairness Doctrine” do not apply to community access channels, there is a clear standard: “Equal opportunity” is afforded for all views to be expressed. The Schedule*

Day 1 of the Kinetic Grand Championship starts on the Plaza in Arcata, California at the noon whistle every Memorial Day weekend. The racers take off to the Manila dunes, where they race through miles of sand to the great and inevitable “Deadman’s Drop.” Then on to Eureka’s downtown gazebo.

Day 2 starts in Eureka at the waterfront on the Humboldt Bay, where brave Kinetic Pilots race their crafts through the water (most float). Then back on land where kinetic sculptures go up Hookton Hill, a 1 mile-7% incline and decline. Day 2 ends with a private campout for racers and volunteers only.

Day 3 starts from the mouth of the Eel River, through Morgan slough and onto dry land. Racers cross the finish line on Ferndale’s historic Mainstreet, where racers park and head up to the Final Awards Dinner at Ferndale’s Fireman’s Hall.0

Re: Transfer of Broadcast TV licenses in Humboldt County California, from Bonten Media Group to Sinclair Broadcast Group

Approval of the Sinclair Bonten deal is another disappointing decision by an FCC that cares not for any public process in the licensing of public airwaves. Just like FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, we were surprised to learn of the decision over a holiday weekend and challenged to engage such an opaque process.  read more »

California Broadband Internet Privacy Act introduced
Coalition supports online privacy protections

Sacramento - State Assemblymember Ed Chau who chairs the Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection today announced introduction of AB375, the California Broadband Internet Privacy Act of 2017. A coalition of over twenty consumer advocates and public interest organizations, including Access Humboldt greeted the announcement with a strong endorsement - see letter attached.

Media Consolidation Harms Communities

FCC policy move harms North Coast
Absentee Ownership of "Local" TV Stations Consolidating

Following action by the Federal Communications Commission last week, Sinclair Broadcasting announced intent to purchase local TV stations in Eureka serving California's North Coast.

Access Humboldt's executive director Sean McLaughlin said, "From experience we know that consolidated absentee ownership reduces competition, threatens media localism and harms information diversity."
