By the close of the 2017 California State Legislature's session, broadband advocates for consumers, local governments and public interests suffered three important setbacks in Sacramento - and the private telecommunications industry dominated. Potential vetoes by Governor Brown are pending for two industry bills that passed.

SB 649 giving private industry rights over public property: Passed with veto pending.

Today, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA) and Rep. David Price (D-NC) introduced the Local and Independent Television Protection Act to prevent further consolidation of absentee ownership in the broadcast TV marketplace nationwide. The legislation would close an obsolete, and recently re-opened, FCC loophole that would dramatically reduce competition and diversity among local TV stations across the country.  read more »

Re: Transfer of Broadcast TV licenses in Humboldt County California, from Bonten Media Group to Sinclair Broadcast Group

Approval of the Sinclair Bonten deal is another disappointing decision by an FCC that cares not for any public process in the licensing of public airwaves. Just like FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, we were surprised to learn of the decision over a holiday weekend and challenged to engage such an opaque process.  read more »

California Broadband Internet Privacy Act introduced
Coalition supports online privacy protections

Sacramento - State Assemblymember Ed Chau who chairs the Assembly Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection today announced introduction of AB375, the California Broadband Internet Privacy Act of 2017. A coalition of over twenty consumer advocates and public interest organizations, including Access Humboldt greeted the announcement with a strong endorsement - see letter attached.
