Short Bio:

Digital ecologist Sean Taketa McLaughlin serves as executive director of Access Humboldt (http://accesshumboldt.net) - a community based organization providing local access media channels, broadband network connections, digital media production resources, training and support for local governments, tribes, educational institutions, non-profit organizations and residents of Humboldt County, California USA.

He is a voting member of the Media and Democracy Coalition (http://www.media-democracy.net/) and serves on the steering/management committees of:
- Schools Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition (http://shlbc.org);
- Rural Broadband Policy Group (http://www.ruralassembly.org/working-groups/broadband); and,
- California Broadband Policy Network (http://californiabroadband.org/.

In 2011 McLaughlin was appointed by the California Public Utilities Commission to the California Teleconnect Fund Administrative Committee (CTF-AC) to represent consumer and community benefit organizations.

McLaughlin married Lori Taketa of Maui, O'ahu and Hawai'i, and is known for his tendency to live in proximity with spectacular natural environments, an affinity for diverse multi-cultural engagement, fearless innovation and a dry eclectic sense of humor.

He is a Knight Media Policy Fellow with New America Foundation http://mediapolicy.newamerica.net/ and a ZFellow with ZeroDivide http://zerodivide.org/. He previously served as an elected member of NATOA’s Board of Directors http://natoa.org, and has published articles, provided expert testimony before legislative and regulatory agencies, and participated in international conferences around the world.

Educated at Dartmouth College, McLaughlin taught "Politics of Media" at the University of Hawai'i - Manoa and served on their Broadcast Communications Authority as vice chair. McLaughlin was the first director of telecommunications for the Honolulu City Council and the first chief executive officer for Akaku: Maui Community Television. During his tenure, Akaku grew to include five cable TV channels, low power FM radio and online media services.

Digital Redwoods initiative is a current effort, http://digitalredwoods.net developing broadband media projects to serve such comprehensive community needs and interests as public safety, health, education, culture, arts and civic engagement.
